    Description

This inner-city precinct is drawing many Western Australians to rediscover the cultural heart of Perth and is fast becoming a favourite meeting place and premier events destination.

Designed by Josh Byrne & Associates, the Perth Cultural Centre play space incorporates fine-tuned musical instruments, dramatic plantings, natural surfaces and unique timber carvings relevant to Western Australia, including the rare sunset frog and spotted gecko. Timber elements such as walling, seating, platforms and carvings were sourced from salvaged hardwoods. Emphasis has been placed on developing children’s balance through play, as well as stimulating their sense of touch and sound.

The play space was created by the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority (then EPRA) in 2011 in response to the requests of visitors to the Perth Cultural Centre and users of the space. The facility was designed for universal access and the materials and colour palette are sensitive to surrounding heritage buildings. Its features align with the educational programs of the WA Museum and it is a popular attraction with schools groups visiting the various institutions. Due to its location in the centre of Perth’s cultural hub, the play space is heavily visited and enjoyed by all ages and walks of life.
