Founded in Sydney over seventy years ago by Jewish immigrant Richard Goldner, Musica Viva’s contribution to the Australian cultural scene is nothing short of astounding. Elgar’s Cello Concerto was the composer’s last orchestral work, and his most confessional. Full of fleeting moments of gentle release, this darkly introspective triumph is a poignant response to a world lost to the Great War. Highly sought-after German cellist Daniel Müller-Schott brings passion and precision to this iconic work in his WASO debut. Then Bruckner’s Third Symphony unfolds with sublime momentum and majesty. Although influenced by and dedicated to his musical idol, Richard Wagner, Bruckner discovered his own voice with this symphony, writing awe-inspiring music of unparalleled beauty and grandeur.

Shostakovich wrote some of the most devastatingly powerful music in the repertoire. Be transported back to Saint Petersburg in 1905 on the eve of the revolution with his intensely charged Eleventh Symphony, as world acclaimed Russian conductor Vasily Petrenko makes his WASO debut. We open with the exuberant overture to Nielsen’s rollicking opera, Maskarade, then shine a light on one of Australia’s brightest musical talents. Emily Sun brings a perfect balance of expression and eloquence to Mozart’s Fourth Violin Concerto.

The Eumeralla river flows through Gunditjmara country in southwest Victoria. It was here, 180 years ago, that war broke out between traditional owners and those who sought to dispossess them of their land.

Combining moving poetry, two choirs, orchestra and the platform of the Requiem mass, a history of heartbreak and horror is revealed in this monumental new work. With a fusion of Western classical tradition and First Nations culture, Eumeralla soars with resilience and reconciliation.

Sung in dialects of the Gunditjmara people of southwestern Victoria. Eumeralla, a war requiem for peace is presented in Perth with support from the Bendat Family Foundation. The Gunditjmara translation was the work of senior Gunditjmara language custodian Vicki Couzens and linguist Travers Eira.

WASO’s Indigenous Creative Collaborations are supported by Bendat Family Foundation.
