On returning from living in the United States, the owners of this spectacular City Beach property couldn't wait to get started on building their dream family home.
After purchasing the land years earlier, the clients decided to demolish the existing run-down 1970s home and start afresh.
With panoramic ocean views to work with, the design brief set out to make the most of the coastal location by building a large undercroft garage and storeroom to enable maximum elevation, and an upper-floor balcony for use on balmy summer nights.
The brief also called for a formal dining room to accommodate a large 1.8m round table, a family room with a built-in television and shelves, a kitchen with separate scullery for food preparation and wash-up, and a sunny breakfast nook.
A guest bedroom suite, generous study with outlook, full-size games room, gym area and large functional laundry were also on the list.
The entrance hall features a wide articulated timber staircase flowing on to the formal dining room, which boasts ocean views and direct access to the kitchen.
Overlooking the outdoor patio, the Hamptons-inspired kitchen is fitted with stunning white cabinetry, Carrera marble benchtops and a fully appointed scullery at the opposite end.
The patio continues the Hamptons theme with painted board ceilings, a cosy outdoor fireplace and tastefully discreet barbecue, with views to terrace gardens and a sparkling blue 17m pool stretching across the northern boundary.
On the upper level, there is a lounge room with a fireplace and bar, two bedrooms and a luxurious master suite.
Traditional proportions for windows and French doors, together with gabled roof elements, stone chimney and a classic grey-and-white colour scheme give the house timeless streetscape appeal.
