Frankland River Wineries

Located approximately 360km south of Perth, Frankland River is one of Western Australia’s best kept secrets. Home to rolling hills, rich and productive farming land, natural forest and bush, the region is fast becoming one of the State’s most successful wine producing regions. Though a diverse range of grape varieties are grown across its 8 wineries, this cool-climate region is most noted for its Shiraz and Riesling. It’s impressive wine show success is a testament to the quality of vineyards and wines of the region.

Wines produced from Frankland River fruit generally have lower alcohol content and are elegant, with intense varietal characteristics. The region’s overall cool climate and long warm growing season ensure the grapes consistently cultivate a delicate intensity and complexity on the vine, indicating that the grapes are a true expression of the terroir.

Between cellar door visits, don’t miss the chance to relax by the pristine Frankland River with a picnic. In warmer months, local swimming spots and watersport activities at Lake Poorrarecup and Lake Nunijup are very popular.

In 1971, the first hectare of cabernet vines was planted and has since expanded to approximately 100ha and include shiraz, malbec, riesling and sauvignon blanc.  The stone-walled cellar door overlooks the vineyards to the south and the vast landscape beyond. Open seven days a week, from 10am - 5pm, the cellar door also serves as a function centre for weddings and other large events.

The wine labels each feature the iconic Australian Grass Tree, and the icon wines are named after native Australian timbers: Wandoo, Blackbutt, Melaleuca and Jarrah.

The Wines
Winemaker Andrew Cherry has been with the Hallett family since 2010 and has amassed an impressive collection of medals, trophies and high scores for the Alkoomi wines.  The portfolio contains three separate ranges, the Icon wines (the best from each vintage), the Black Label wines (intended for mid-long term cellaring, premium fruit), and the White Label wines (intended for early drinking, short term cellaring).
