Six family-friendly museum & gallery exhibitions open now in Fremantle

Fremantle has a rich history as the original port for the Swan River Colony back in 1829 and so is home to numerous historical sites, galleries and museums. Take a day out with family and explore some of the top family-friendly exhibitions open to the public.

ITALY - Twilight skylines from police helicopters

Located at the WA Maritime Museum, ITALY - Twilight skylines from police helicopters is an exhibition containing twenty beautiful images of Italian landscapes and monuments captured at sunrise and sundown. These images are a collaborated effort between award winning photographer Massimo Sestini and Italy’s Police. Head down and immerse yourself in the stunning imagery of some of Italy’s most beautiful cities and landmarks.

Protest and Unrest

Protest and Unrest is a unique exhibition examining the history of protests and conditions at Fremantle Prison. Through personal accounts from officers and inmates, Protest and Unrest questions why prisoners felt the need to protest and explores how they went about fighting for change. The exhibition features never before seen objects such as weapons from the riots of 1988 as well as original prisoners graffiti. Protest and Unrest presents a confronting look into the history of Fremantle Prison.

Revealed Exhibition 2020: New & Emerging WA Aboriginal Artists

Fremantle Arts Centre is currently showcasing Revealed Exhibition; a celebration of new and emerging Aboriginal artists from across WA. For this exhibition, four artists with varying artistic styles and stories are featured; Selinda Davidson, Judy Miller, Rita Watson and Cassaria Young-Hogan. Revealed is a free showcase that highlights the diversity and richness of Aboriginal art practices across the state. This exhibition offers upcoming artists the change to enhance their careers and showcase their stories.

Shipwrecked!

Home to many culturally rich permanent exhibitions such as the Batavia Gallery and the Hartog to de Vlamingh Gallery, the WA Shipwrecks Museum is currently offering their Shipwrecked! exhibition over the duration of the school holidays. This is perfect for younger children (4 years and over) to explore whilst the rest of the family discovers the long term exhibits. Participants are shipwrecked on ‘Traitor’s Island’ and must follow a trail of clues to get back to safety. Shipwrecked! is both educational and fun; an exhibition that the kids will love!

Ancient Rome: Epic Innovators and Engineers

The WA Maritime Museum is offering the chance to immerse yourself in one of the most technologically significant eras in the history of the western world. Epic Innovators and Engineers offers insight into the technology, machinery, military genius and general life during the Roman Imperial period (27BC-476AD). This exhibition provides a fun day out for the whole family, however, is targeted towards primary aged children. Head down and check out some of the objects constructed during this time that are still a part of our lives today.

The Roundhouse

Fremantle is home to the iconic Roundhouse; one of the oldest standing buildings in Western Australia. The first permanent building built in the Swan River Colony, opened in 1831, The Roundhouse was originally built to house people convicted of crimes, was later converted to a Police lock-up, and eventually saved from demolition in the 1920s. Open 10.30am — 3.30pm every day, The Roundhouse offers a historical walk-through experience with a stunning view.
