Silver Thomas Hanley is one of Australia’s leading architectural practices, specialising in all aspects of health planning and health facility design, with an expanding focus on aged-care, retirement and assisted-living environments.

The team at Silver Thomas Hanley work hard to maintain the practice's reputation as an industry-leading, exceptionally reliable and creative healthcare-architecture firm. This reputation is reflected in the fact that the practice has been involved in most of the major public and private health projects undertaken in WA in the past 25 years, with many clients returning time and again.

Silver Thomas Hanley's integrated planning and design service extends to clients both nationally and internationally, and its experience encompasses projects from hospitals and clinics, to other related building typologies.

These include technically and functionally complex buildings for research, laboratories and tertiary training, and less formalised environments for aged care and mental health.

Originally formed in 1953, the practice evolved into Silver Thomas Hanley in 1985.

Since then it has completed an impressive portfolio of work on projects ranging in value from $1m to $2b, in Australia and overseas. The talented team of more than 40 professionals has more than three decades of experience in health-facility planning and design.

In 2015, Silver Thomas Hanley was a key part of the architectural joint venture to be awarded the highest honour in WA architecture, the George Temple Poole Award, for its outstanding work on Fiona Stanley Hospital.

The award's jury noted that The Fiona Stanley Hospital was an ambitious State project, a landmark in all senses, which achieves a high standard of design, integrating architecture and landscape architecture.

The architecture that Silver Thomas Hanley delivers acknowledges the fundamental relationship between healing and the built environment, and reflects this in a humane and sensitive approach to wellness settings.

In upcoming projects such as Narrogin and Warren district hospitals, and St Ives Residential Care Carine, Silver Thomas Hanley is aiming to set new design benchmarks for these types of facilities. Through the creative architecture process, the team is developing solutions that go beyond the functional and efficient to deliver facilities that are beautiful to inhabit and inspirational to visit.

The care setting is no longer a sterile, inhospitable institution, rather an all-embracing part of its community, engendering pride in its owners and users.

Changing epidemiology, demographics and care protocols are resulting in myriad
different wellness settings, each of them offering a new exciting opportunity for
creative thinking.

From community-based healthcare services to lifestyle and aged-care scenarios, Silver Thomas Hanley is committed to developing innovative and forward-looking solutions.
