They say laughter is the best medicine, and there’s no shortage of it in WA. While the biggest international comedy acts regularly pack arenas and theatres in Perth, the city has a booming underground scene with performances happening almost every night of the week. Events such as Perth Comedy Festival, Just For Laughs, Fringe World and RAW Comedy feature hundreds of acts, while festival roadshows deliver laughs to locations across the state.

Description

For the first ever, WAAPA at Edith Cowan University is taking its popular annual Halloween concert into the heart of the city – and it’s going to be a lot of fun!

The Symphonic Wind Ensemble presents a program of epic proportions, including a world premiere by WAAPA’s own Jonathan Jie Hong Yang (of Brave the Wave fame) and the Australian premiere of Victoriano Valencia’s Three Colombian Scenes for Alto Saxophone and Band with special guest saxophonist Matt Styles.

For a touch of Halloween madness, there’s Eric Whitacre’s crowd-favourite showpiece, Godzilla Eats Las Vegas!, which invites the performers to do anything to get a laugh – including wearing hilarious costumes, acting out scenes on stage and using crazy video and lighting.

The concert culminates in Wine Dark Sea, a 2014 symphony for band by American composer John Mackey. Inspired by Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey, this bold and compelling piece combines the full force of the Symphonic Wind Ensemble with percussion, prepared pianos and harps.

“This is the most exciting and ambitious program that SWE has ever put together,” says WAAPA’s Head of Woodwind and Spooktacular music director, Philip Everall. “We can’t wait to get into the Perth Concert Hall – it’s going to be a hoot!”

The staff and students of WAAPA are incredibly happy, excited and privileged to be able to perform for a live audience in this fabulous and iconic venue. So grab your fancy dress costume and we’ll see you there!

Please be advised this event is being sold with socially distanced seating configurations in accordance with current Government restrictions. Should government restrictions change, further seats will be released for sale.

The pandemic has impacted everyone in different ways. Stress and anxiety have been on the rise, so there is no doubt that the people of Perth could do with some laughter therapy. Let’s take a break from all the chaos. Lockdown is over, we can finally laugh together again.

Can We Laugh Again? is a night of comedy and entertainment you don’t want to miss! The lineup of local and internationally touring comedians including MC Jon Pinder, Jason Wood, Simone Springe, Chief Kosse and special guests, this show is going to be a reckless amount of fun.

To top it off, the night will be headlined by none other than the sensational Emo, winner of the 2018 State Raw Comedy Competition. After a full run of sold out shows around WA, there is no doubt these tickets will move quick, so don’t wait silly!

Emo has been quietly making a name for himself in Perth since 2016, developing his style and a strong local following. With a past that includes fleeing war torn Ethiopia as a refugee, and being a minority young face in 90s Perth suburbia, Emo draws upon his experiences to create a style that is both funny and socially relevant. In his words, his shows are a platform to ‘share stories, bring down society’s barriers and catch the laughter bug’. Emo has been on fire, winning the WA finals for the 2018 Raw Comedy Festival, and performing in the National Finals at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, aired on SBS. He has performed in the 2018 & 2019 Fringe Festivals, headlined his own shows and performed in the US. Check out his Facebook and Instagram for details on these and many other shows.

Description

Award-winning director Barry Park is at the helm of the forthcoming GRADS’ production of Mart Crowley’s groundbreaking smash hit play THE BOYS IN THE BAND, which will be staged at The Dolphin Theatre, UWA from 4th to 14th November.

After half a century, back on stage will be the camping, the fighting and laughing and crying, Mart Crowley’s insightful portrait of gay friendship as both endurance test and saving grace.

One of the first productions to put gay lives front and centre, it is about a group of entertaining, angst-ridden, openly gay men who gather for a friend's birthday - which goes horribly wrong.

‘This play has a wide appeal,’ Park says, ‘as it is an engrossing, character-driven story. Older audiences will be reminded about how different attitudes and values were in the 60s, while those who are younger will be intrigued to see how difficult it was to be gay 52 years ago. Many will recognise aspects of themselves in the play, as essentially the play is about how people relate to one other. ‘

Fifty years after it first opened, THE BOYS IN THE BAND finally made it to Broadway, a production that won the Tony Award for best revival, directed by Joe Mantello with a cast that included Zachary Quinto and Jim Parsons. A new film version of the play featuring the entire Broadway cast is on Netflix in September.

Be sure not to miss the rare opportunity to see this deliriously delicious, bitingly bitchy, groundbreaking gay play, which has not been performed in Perth for years!

Tickets are $35, $25 concession (groups of 8+, pensioners, students). Book at: https://www.ticketswa.com/ Enquiries: [email protected] Phone: 08 6488 2440 Call between Noon and 4pm on weekdays. The Dolphin Theatre is located within the University of WA with entry from Mounts Bay Road or Hackett Drive. Parking is free. The production is by arrangement with ORIGIN Theatrical on behalf of Samuel French Inc.
