Beaufort Street bar Clarences reopens as Clarences Company Store under new owners at 4pm on Wednesday, January 20.

When Clarences closed its doors for good in May 2020, Mt Lawley locals were disheartened at best and devastated at worst. Having essentially started the trend of small bars in Perth when it opened back in 2009, Clarences was a significant fixture of the Beaufort Street bar scene, along with other since-closed favourites such as Five Bar.

Fast forward to 2021, and we can all share a jump for joy as Clarences has reopened its doors with the original layout, but a new name and a new vibe: think funky New Orleans jazz with just a smidgen of 90s hip-hop. Regulars will remember the stunning floorboards, vintage stained glass light fittings above the bar, the large circle table round back and of course, the courtyard (now under a canopy of warm fairy lights); all of which are still in play, thanks to new owner Eli Barlow spending so many of his nights at Clarences back in the day.

New features include walls mounted with a light fitting of salvaged brass instruments, a piano (both nods to the low-fi jazz shows that will be implemented later) and green banquette seating with classic cafe tables inside and outside.

The menu has been designed by Varnish on King's Chef Daire Fox and exudes an American flair, whilst championing the best of WA's local produce. Expect menu appearances from Dandaragan Organic Beef, Linley Valley Pork, seafood from Fins, Leeuwin Coast Akoya oysters and duck livers and heritage chicken from Wagin Duck.

In terms of the drinks list, you'll be in good hands with El Grotto & Si Paradiso's Phil Weber, who created the menu with the theme of New Orleans in mind. So, get ready for a world of whiskey cocktails, or if you prefer, whiskey on the rocks. Of course, there's also a hefty list of local and international wines, craft beers and other spirits.

The doors at 566 Beaufort St, Mt Lawley swing open on Wednesday, January 20 at 4pm. Ongoing, Clarences Company Store will trade Wednesday to Sunday, open from 4-10pm Wednesdays, Thursdays & Sundays and 4pm-12am on Fridays & Saturdays.
