Alicia Estate Winery

Description

Originally planted in 2001, the Alicia Estate Vineyard was established by Alicia and Jacob, a tenacious couple who brought their winemaking dreams from Europe. Jacob's father and grandfather were wine and spirit merchants in Silesia for decades, and Alicia's mother, born in France, possessed an extensive knowledge of French winemaking methods and cuisine. This family influence and passion for wine and good food planted the seed which grew to include a winery and popular restaurant that have been operating since 2010.

The Wines

All of Alicia Estate's wines are organically grown, and include varieties of Shiraz, Zinfandel, Chardonnay and their signature Black Knight Honey Mead. Produced from a Medieval recipe originating from Bernadine and Capuchin monasteries, the estate's Honey Mead is made from honey sourced from their own beehives.

Cellar Door

The cellar door at Alicia Estate is open Fridays 10am-3:30pm and weekends from 10am-4pm.

The Food

The restaurant serves an extensive a la carte menu of featuring 30+ dishes of traditional German, Swiss and Austrian recipes to complement the styles and varieties of wine produced on the estate. Description

Enjoying a climate reminiscent of Portugal’s famous Duoro Valley, Beltana Springs’ vines are grown in ideal conditions of cold winter dormancy and hot, dry summers. First planted in 2000 on the property’s best Red Gum soils, the vines of Beltana Springs are hand-picked from low yielding vines to ensure premium ripe grape extraction. Beltana Springs wines are exported to the UK, US and other major markets, but also available for purchase on their website.

The Wines

The Shiraz is Beltana Springs’ flagship wine and was awarded the Bronze medal at the West Australian Wheatbelt Wine Awards. A deep purple-hue with a hint of Australian forest, the wine is aged for twenty four months in new European oak barrels, giving added complexity and a smooth and long finish. Beltana’s Grenache, conversely, presents a rich and clear colour, offering red berries and the menthol of the Red Gums growing within the vineyard. Also matured in new European oak, the Grenache’s palate is full-bodied and intensely flavoured, with strong, ripe tannins and a long finish. The vineyard also offers a Grenache Rose and a Cabernet Sauvignon.

 

 

Coorinja Vineyard

Description

Established in the late 1870s, this family-owned property, about 6km from Toodyay has over five generations of winemaking history. The winery has been in the Wood family since 1919, and still contains many of the original 470 and 770 gallon casks within its cellar.

All grapes are grown on scenic undulating slopes around the property, and are farmed with environmental conservation as one of the winery's main values. The natural approach sees only mineral fertilisers and soil microbes used to grow chemical-free, quality grapes.

The Wines

Coorinja produces a large selection of table and fortified wines including Shiraz, Grenache, Cabernet-Shiraz, Port, Sherry, Muscat, Liqueur Muscat, Ginger Wine and Marsala. The wines are handpicked by the Wood family and their friends and pressed in an old wooden basket press, following the same family tradition used for over five generations.

Open Fridays, Saturdays and Mondays from 10am-5pm, or on alternate days by appointment only.

Unique Highlights

Coorinja is an Aboriginal word believed to mean "place of the seven springs". These natural springs surround the property. A short five minute walk down a bush track reveals remnants of the Ringa Bridge, a significant railway track built circa 1887 that was closed down in 1966.

Description

Founded by Rex and Jan Hayes in 1997, Downderry vines grow on what was a working farm for many years. Originally the co-owner of Narrogin's local liquour store, Rex has always had a passion for the perfect drop and a determination to prove the well-matured loam and gravel over clay soils on his property could host healthy vines. The harvest season is truly a community affair at Downderry, with several local charities and sporting groups contributing to grape-picking.

The wines are made by Wine Society's Young Winemaker of the Year in 2013, Coby Ladwig of Rockcliffe's Wines.

The Wines

Varieties include an earthy Shiraz, Rose, Moscato, Sparkling and an award-winning Zinfandel. Downderry Wines has won more than 20 medals and trophies in the Wandering Wheatbelt Wine Awards.

Cellar Door

Enjoy teas and coffees alongside generous wine and cheese tastings at this quaint, family-friendly cellar door operated by the estate's friendly owners (and a handful of cuddly sheep and alpacas for kids to enjoy). Open Friday to Monday 11am - 5pm.

Unique Highlights

Caravaners are welcome to stay overnight on the grass for $5 a night (fee waived with the purchase of wine!)

Description

Established in 2000 by the Hillier family, the estate is a single vineyard producer that also operates a microbrewery and accommodation from its premises. Situated 5km north of Collie, on the eastern border of the Geographe Wine Region, this prime location provides ironstone gravel soils and a cool altitude to enable production of premium wines with finesse and flavour.

The Wines

Harris River produce Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Merlot, Shiraz, Verdelho and Chardonnay. They also have the unique offer of purchasing wine in a keg, perfect for events or who like to keep their environment footprint minimal.

Cellar Door & Restaurant

Complimentary wine and beer tastings can be enjoyed alongside a tasty, seasonal tapas grazing menu. Open Wednesday to Sunday 12pm - 3:30pm. The restaurant is open for light, healthy breakfasts and tapas lunches from Friday to Sunday, 10am - 4pm. Visitors can dine alfresco on the verandah, have a picnic on the lawn, or sit inside the restaurant beside a cosy log fire.

 

Hotham Ridge Winery

Description

Formerly Hotham Valley Estate, the vineyard was planted in 1988. Current owners Leonard Bruin and Wouter Denig converted the operation to follow strict organic and biodynamic practices in 2002. Situated at an altitude of 350 metres, the vineyards enjoy ideal growing conditions of hot summers and cool winters, evident in the wines which combine elegance, structure and vibrant fruit characters.

Hotham Ridge has won over 30 different medals and 11 trophies from various Australian wine shows since 2003.

The Wines

Varieties include Chenin Blanc, Semillon, Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Shiraz, Tempranillo, Verdelho and Zinfandel. A Mistelle white port or Shiraz port are also available in winter.

Cellar Door

Open from Friday-Sunday 11am-3pm, the rustic cellar door offers a stunning environment to discover the wines and learn about organic and biodynamic winemaking principles.

Unique Highlights

Check out the large rammed-earth barrel room that has been transformed into an art gallery with an industrial style. Ten different exhibitions are shown each year. Two self catered cottages are available in the Hotham Ridge property too.

Tanglefoot

Enjoy award-winning Wheatbelt wine and homely, country café dining at this quaint and friendly, rammed-earth and timber cellar door just 1.5 hours south-east of Perth.

Tanglefoot is a family owned and operated vineyard located in Wandering, 1.5 hours south-east of Perth. The vines are over 20 years old and grape varieties grown include Semillon, Zinfandel Tintacao, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Primivito and Merlot. All available to purchase by the glass or bottle at the cellar door.

Cellar Door

The rammed-earth cellar door is a highlight in itself, utilising local timbers, Jarrah, Sheoak and Salmon Gum for a homely, country ambience. Drop-in wine tastings are available, or stay a while and enjoy a delightful morning tea, afternoon tea and lunch at Tanglefoot’s Cafe . Open Friday to Sunday 10am - 5pm.
