To celebrate the 250th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven’s birth, the West Australian Symphony Orchestra presents his one and only opera, Fidelio!

Don’t miss your chance to see an exceptional rendition of this rare and unique work of art. Fidelio is presented by Perth Festival and the West Australian Symphony Orchestra in association with the West Australian Opera.

Fidelio tells a tale of heroism, deceit, and great triumph of the two lovers Florestan and Leonore. The opera is set in Spain, where Florestan is imprisoned out of spite and pronounced dead to the world. The governor whom Florestan had wronged keeps him locked away in a secret dungeon, but his wife Leonore musters her courage and hatches a cunning plan to save him! She disguises herself as the male guard Fideleo and infiltrates the prison’s ranks in order to help Florestan escape. Witness the daring rescue and the triumph of their love as justice prevails!

An extraordinary blend of Beethoven’s composition and modern rendition, Fidelio promises to be a radiant and emotional articulation of persistence and justice. Fidelio will be performed by the synthesis of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, as well as the West Australian Opera, featuring an incredibly talented cast and crew. This once-in-a-lifetime performance will feature Allison Croggon’s storytelling talent, Eryn Jean Norville as narrator, and German soprano Christiane Libor’s heroic performance of Leonore, all under the amazing direction of Asher Fisch and Clare Watson. The opera will be performed in the original German, but don’t worry; it will be narrated in English and accompanied by surtitles, so you won’t miss a thing!

Ludwig van Beethoven was a German composer and pianist, considered to be one of the greatest classical musicians of all time. Fidelio was produced in his “middle period”, where many of his works reflected acts of heroism in light of his encroaching deafness. As Fidelio is his only opera, it is a unique and beautiful piece of Beethoven’s work.
