Subi Hotel’s carpark is about to host the battle of the baos, with seven food trucks facing off for the title of Perth’s best bao bun.

Run by Khao Mai - the food truck mastermind behind Food Hub Central and Subiaco Street Food - alongside the Subi Hotel, the festival is set to open your mind to possibilities of bao you didn’t even know existed. With The Dirty Swine serving up pork crackle bao, and the Banana Leaf Modern Filipino Street Food and Hoki Bao trucks specialising in bao with a Filipino or Taiwanese twist, as well as a tonne of the traditional Chinese style, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

There’s even a Chinese food truck that has created a special bao just for the day. Master Panda, who traditionally serve Chinese crepes, have crafted a bao incorporating the ingredients and flavours of the crepes, as well as offering their regular menu. For the vegetarian and vegan bao-lovers, almost every truck has an option, with The Dirty Swine serving pulled jackfruit bao.

If you’re more of a sweet tooth, you’re in luck! There will be two dessert trucks on site, with Torch My Brulee serving up crème brulee torched right before your eyes and The Sweet Box Cart offering their iconic Giant Gelato Macaroon Sliders. It’s exactly what it sounds like – a massive macaroon sandwich filled with gelato on a stick!

Once you’ve got your bao fix and want to move on to the beer side, the Subi Hotel has you covered. Offering up beers from local craft beer idols Beerfarm and Little Creatures, as well as tap beer’s usual suspects, you’re sure to find something you fancy to wash down all that bao.

In more of a laid-back, people’s choice voting system, punters can nominate themselves to judge via the Facebook event and Khao will randomly select 6 people to do the honours.

The best part? The beer and bao festival is free entry, and the organisers will be handing out bar cards and bao giveaways throughout the day, so there’s no excuse not to pop down!
