The 33rd Alliance Française French Film Festival returns in 2022 with over 40 feature films and documentaries showing from March 9 to April 6. Alliance Française de Perth director, Thomas Feldstein, has compiled a list of the top 5 films on show this year.

1. Lost Illusions

A great adaptation of the novel by Balzac, filmed in outdoor locations like the Palais-Royal, the Grands Boulevards and the Luxembourg Park. Like the book, the topic is very actual, with a critic of the media. But it’s also the nice story of a young man coming from the countryside, who discovers Paris, its pleasures and its treacheries. You will enjoy this one if you like historical movies, with nice period costumes.

2. La Traviata, my brothers and I

A very nice film, very simple and radiant, very well acted by actors who are not well known but who are very convincing. The story of a child in a complicated family situation (but without it being maudlin) who discovers opera singing. It is very touching. You will enjoy this one if you like an intimate movie, where the most important thing is the relationship between people.

3. The Velvet Queen

A film to see for the magnificent landscapes. The film was shot in Eastern Tibet, on plateaus situated at an average altitude of 4500m with peaks at 6000m. It’s a “slow movie”, as it takes time to show the landscapes and the animals of this region. My daughters (7yo and 11yo) loved it so definitely recommended as one the whole family can enjoy!

4. Farewell Mr Haffman

Three great actors for a dark movie, where the characters are revealed in the difficult historical context of the World War II Paris, occupied by the Nazis. A story of trust, betrayal, lure of profit and social advancement. The photography of the film is fabulous, the shots show us all the emotion of the characters. I was enthralled by this historical-psychological thriller which draws up a human triangle rich in complex feelings and emotions.

5. Hear Me Out

A romantic comedy about a man who is losing his hearing, which leads to comic situations with his neighbour (Sandrine Kimberlain, I love her!). Touching, funny and full of tenderness, it’s a “feel good movie” thanks to its humanity and simplicity. The beauty and success of the film also rests largely on the emotional and charismatic performance of the two main actors. This is a wonderful moment of simple French cinema.
