Description

This premium cheese platter of self-absorbed characters will have you at once wishing for the glorious blooming days of the 1980s and shrinking at the familiarity of it.

The final play written by Chekhov in his dying days was intended to be his most hilarious comedy. This adaptation takes the story from Russia in the 1880s and replants the orchard to a fictional late 1980s Manjimup in WA. From boom to bust, as the recession hit in 1987 and the America’s Cup put WA on the world stage, Madame Ranyevskya has to sell up and move out.

Venue capacity is small, so audiences get to experience this production across the Sunset Heritage Precinct, from in the family home in the former ballroom, flowing through to a sunset picnic under the gum trees overlooking the Swan river, then onto the lawn for a dress-up party.”

The Sum of Us

  • Type:Aboriginal Art & Events
  • Performing Arts:Theatre
  • Produced By:Yirra Yaakin
  • Event Venue:Subiaco Arts Centre

Description

The Sum of Us is a beautiful tale of a strong family bond, ageing, queerness and the dance we all do when searching for love. Written by David Stevens, The Sum of Us will be performed by an Australian First Nations cast in a 2.5 hour production spiced with Latin dancing and great music from the 1990s. In an industry where Indigenous people are constantly asked to relive their trauma instead of normalising good relationships, this play is about a beautiful father-son relationship and their search for love. This is the first time Yirra Yaakin has produced a play with a focus on queer identity. It will be presented as part of the need to display functional and dysfunctional families and represent First Nations people as contemporary, dynamic and evolutionary members of society.

How's a guy supposed to find Mr. Right when his father is always up in his business? That's the premise of this warm comedy that revolves around the comfortable relationship between widower Harry and his son Jeff. A beautiful tale of a strong family bond, ageing, queerness and the dance we all do when searching for love, this is Yirra Yaakin's first queer work. Performed by an Australian First Nations cast; it is a story that no culture is exempt from. Balancing humour and pathos, The Sum of Us remains as relevant today as it was 30 years ago.

Description

Young up and coming Perth duo Faraday's Cage will open the stage with an impressive mix of Indie neo-soul vocals and skilful instrumentation.

Then, headline act Royal Australian Navy (RAN) Band Western Australia will entertain with a diverse repertoire of Australian and international hits – from Guy Sebastian, Tones and I, Paul Kelly, INXS, Hunters & Collectors, to Bruno Mars, Cee Lo Green, Pink, Aston Merrygold and Taylor Swift. Plus some timeless favourites from Van Morrison, Dusty Springfield, Wilson Picket, Tina Turner and Queen.
