  • Hosted By:Musica Viva
  • Music:Classical
  • Produced By:Musica Viva
  • Event Venue:Perth Concert Hall

Description

As a 15-year-old student nearing the end of his first year at the Vienna Conservatory, Gustav Mahler composed one movement of a piano quartet, a work that always gives the impression that something bigger is struggling to emerge. Following Mahler’s own tradition of enlarging certain chamber pieces, this program includes an orchestration of the quartet, made by the outstanding violinist Harry Ward: an ANAM alumnus and a Musica Viva FutureMaker.

Alfred Schnittke was keenly aware of his Soviet/German musical heritage, even as he stomped on it in heavy boots. Yet his piano concerto is a touching affirmation of his artistic roots, and his affection for Tchaikovsky makes the two Russians good bedfellows, the elder’s Serenade here prefaced by Estonian composer Mihkel Kerem’s Lamento, a work of searing beauty.

ANAM’s ensemble of wonderful young string players is directed with equal verve by the terrific Sophie Rowell, one of Australia’s most admired instrumentalists. They are joined onstage by Adelaide’s brilliant, Russian-trained Konstantin Shamray.

Four Stars – Sydney Morning Herald
The audience rewarded their performance with several curtain calls, accentuated by the kind of whooping one might expect at a rock concert. City News
Four and ½ Stars…. the future of Australia’s classical music is in safe hands ….a finely judged and memorable performance of Tchaikovsky’s crowd-pleaser, Serenade for Strings in C major, to put the seal on a concert from the top shelf. - Limelight

  • Time(s):Every half-hour from 6:15pm until 8:45pm
  • Venue:Perth Cultural Centre

  • Performing Arts:Theatre

Description

COMA is set in a 40ft sea-container, each wall lined with bunk beds. Audience members lie down in a bed, each becoming separated from their counterparts. Alone in the darkness, the multi-sensory elements engulf each participant, suggestive of the show’s own namesake. Imagine the moment of waking up is actually the moment when your dream begins. In light of this new and strange reality, how can we save you from the unspeakable horrors which lurk in the dark recesses of your mind? The only cure we offer is a placebo and a promise. Please remember when you leave, to take your body with you. The setting is clinical and reminiscent of a hospital ward, and despite being created prior to COVID-19, it becomes more relevant and confronting now that the pandemic is ever-present. As with all Darkfield experiences, a strange world is built from 360 degree binaural sound that perplexes the senses, deepening the immersion by casting doubt on what is real and what is imagined. Loss of vision heightens the remaining senses, making them vulnerable to manipulation.

As a legacy work, Koorlangka has proven to be a spectacular way to continue to push this renaissance of Noongar language; to take this rare language and showcase it in the most beautiful and compelling way on stages all over the world. Noongar language underpins the values, ethos and aspirations of our community, and this production weaves stories of love and loss, of joy and triumph, celebrating the things we have in common.

Gina and Guy welcome everyone to come and “sit at our campfire” and share Noongar songs and stories. They hope their work will inspire others to learn to speak and sing Noongar language. The songs have been written first in Noongar, then back-translated to English.

“This was a moving, engaging and important performance, but more than anything it was simply wonderful music brilliantly performed, bringing the Noongar language to the hearts and minds of a wider audience” - Seesaw Magazine
