This multi award winning film tells the story of a  young African-American man grappling with his identity and sexuality while experiencing the everyday struggles of childhood, adolescence, and burgeoning adulthood.
Told through three time periods – young adolescence, mid-teen and young adult, Chiron lives with his single, drug addicted mother Paula in a crime ridden neighborhood in Miami. Chiron is a shy, withdrawn child largely due to his small size and being neglected by his mother, who is more concerned about getting her fixes and satisfying her carnal needs than taking care of him. Because of these issues, Chiron is bullied, the slurs hurled at him which he doesn’t understand beyond knowing that they are meant to be hurtful. Besides his same aged Cuban-American friend Kevin, Chiron is given what little guidance he has in life from a neighborhood drug dealer named Juan, who can see that he is neglected, and Juan’s caring girlfriend Teresa, whose home acts as a sanctuary away from the bullies and away from Paula’s abuse. With this childhood as a foundation, Chiron may have a predetermined path in life, one that will only be magnified in terms of its problems when he reaches his difficult teen years when peer pressure affects what he and many of his peers do, unless he follows Juan’s advice of truly making his own decisions for himself.

ARE you never too old to fall in love?

It’s a question explored in a romantic comedy at Melville Theatre, aptly-titled Old Love, written by Norm Foster and directed by Vanessa Jensen.

Divorced man Bud meets the recently-widowed Molly – the wife of his former boss – again after many years, when he comes to pay his respects.

The two narrate the story of their initial meetings and how their lives have now led them to the point of taking a chance on happiness in old love.

Foster is considered Canada’s most produced playwright, known for his humour and insight into the trials and tribulations of everyday life, and is frequently compared to US playwright Neil Simon.

Old Love features Bud and Molly in the present but also their younger selves 25-plus years earlier,” Vanessa said.

“Having two actors convincingly portray the same character, albeit at different times of their lives, is the main challenge.

“Two other actors also play two important roles each without the aid of major costume changes, which can also be potentially tricky.

“The stage manager plays two minor roles and there are a few other cameo characters, so having a strong cast is imperative.”

First appearing on stage as an eight-year-old and directing her first show at 14, Vanessa has a wealth of theatre experience behind her.

She wrote, directed, stage-managed and acted in various shows at Curtin University’s Hayman Theatre over a four-year period and has staged a plethora of successful productions at the Old Mill and Melville Theatres.

Vanessa has plenty of best director and best play awards and nominations to her credit for shows including Away, Jamie’s Chooks, Twelve Angry Men, Mr Bailey’s Minder, Amadeus, Rabbit Hole and Love, Loss and What I Wore.

“After a difficult year for everyone, Melville Theatre wanted to present a lighter play that would bring a positive end to 2020,” she said.

“Norm Foster is a well-known Canadian playwright who writes warm, funny plays that are readily received by audiences.

Old Love certainly fit the bill because it is gentle, humorous and it’s underpinning theme is hope.”

Old Love plays at 8pm November 19, 20, 26, 27, 28, December 3, 4 and 5 with a 2pm matinee November 29. Tickets are $23, $18 concession – book at www.TAZTix.com.au.

Melville Theatre is at 393A Canning Highway (corner of Stock Road), Palmyra.

SKELETONS come tumbling out of the closet at a wedding in Stirling Theatre’s latest offering.

Written by Janet Shaw and directed by Barry Lefort, Full Circle is a black comedy spanning four decades – Dee and Millie haven’t spoken since 1969 and nobody knows why.

Fate took over when their children met and married, forcing them to tolerate each other on social occasions and avoid one another the rest of the time.

When they turn up for their granddaughter’s wedding, plans unravel and a spiral of destruction weaves it way through the proceedings – leading back to what happened that fateful day 40 years ago.

“I have read a few plays by Janet Shaw and really like the way she writes about life in modern families,” Barry said.

“She captures the comedic, dramatic and sometimes sad aspects of them.

Full Circle has all these elements and gives the cast an opportunity to portray these characters as if in real life.

“This show in particular reminds me so much of some of the gatherings we had with my family in England.”

A life member of Stirling Theatre, Barry joined the group in 1974 after emigrating from England and has directed and performed in a plethora of plays over the years.

“With Full Circle, I have some very experienced actors in the cast and one or two who have not performed as much, so the challenge is to ensure we work as a team to produce the best possible outcome,” he said.

“A director should always encourage constructive ideas from the team and be prepared to make changes that will add to the enjoyment for both the cast and audience.

“A happy team will produce a great show.”

Full Circle plays at 8pm November 20, 21, 26, 27, 28, December 3, 4 and 5 with 2pm matinees November 22 and 29. Tickets are $22, $20 concession – book through Morris News on 9446 9120 or at www.trybooking.com/BHPJL.

Directed and adapted by Kathleen Del Casale from JM Barrie’s original story, it follows Peter as he tries to retrieve his shadow.

He arrives with Tinkerbell in the nursery of Wendy, John and Michael Darling and together they embark on adventures in Neverland.

Peter Pan is no better described than a story about ‘the boy who never grew up’,” Kathleen said.

“JM Barrie perfectly captures the innocence of childhood and how adulthood almost haunts it, lurking out of reach until it forces itself in.

“But at the same time it’s a wonderful, fun, nostalgic and fantastical story.”

Kathleen opted to do her own adaptation because she felt the 1904 original couldn’t be staged with “ethical sensitivity”.

“Audiences will notice there are Amazon warriors now – with the most amazing costumes! – who have replaced some of the original characters,” she said.

“This also helped with casting because we often get a lot of females auditioning at the theatre.”

Acting for the past 15 years, Kathleen has performed, directed or written for Stargate Actors Academy, HEY Fever and Snapshot Youth, Agelink and Limelight Theatres.

In 2012-13, she travelled to the UK to play May Gibbs in a touring production of River Dreaming and followed it up in 2015-16 with A Land of Legends.

Kathleen has been in numerous musicals including Hairspray, Anything Goes, Sweet Charity, Greenwicks and The Wedding Singer and has directed Death of a Salesman and co-directed Rock of Ages.

Peter Pan is my favourite story,” she said. “I fell in love with it when I first read it as a 12-year-old.

“It really captured my imagination and has always stayed with me – my first tattoo was of the ‘second star to the right’ group of stars from the story.

“My amazing crew and I have put a lot of hours into creating Neverland and it will really transport people back to their childhood selves.

“We’ve squeezed a huge amount of work into the rehearsal period and have some great stuff for our audiences to enjoy.”

Peter Pan plays at 7.30pm November 26, 27, 28, December 3, 4, 5, 10, 11 and 12 with 2pm matinees November 28, December 5 and 12.
